Violent Perfection
“...they were locked in an embrace from which I thought my mistress would never be released alive…” (Bronte, 157)
This quotation is a really good representative of the destructive relationship between Heathcliff and Catherine. While they both loved each other and were desperate to be together, they couldn’t be without hurting each other. Heathcliff’s embrace was one which Catherine could not escape alive, both in the physical sense and the emotional sense. Catherine and Heathcliff essentially killed each other through trying to love each other. If either had been even a little bit less violent in their love, maybe it would have worked out between them, or maybe neither would have been interested. Either way, Heathcliff and Catherine’s love was a destructive one, which is accurately represented through this quote.
I chose to use broken glass to represent Heathcliff’s relationship with Catherine because while they fit together perfectly, it was a fragile and broken relationship capable of great harm to everyone around them. Catherine said early on in the book that she and Heathcliff were very similar and fit together perfectly, and yet the relationship proved to be the most destructive in the novel, and eventually killed her. The broken glass symbolizes the fact that the two characters fit together like a puzzle, but had edges sharp enough to ruin lives.
